Bulleid 'Canadian Pacific' 1947
Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 Pacific. First Series, 35005 'Canadian Pacific'
Designed by Oliver Bulleid, the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Southern Railway, ‘Canadian Pacific’, originally numbered 21C5, emerged from the Eastleigh shed and entered traffic in January 1942 in the Southern Railway’s Malachite green, however at the time it was named in March of that year the locomotive was repainted in wartime black.
This illustration shows how 21C5 looked for a short time under Southern ownership in late 1947 and early 1948, between the wartime black livery and the renumbering after nationalisation, when it returned to its original livery of Malachite green with the three yellow stripes. It had undergone further modifications in those intervening years: the flared smoke deflectors were replaced with the standard type deflectors in 1947. 21C5 was renumbered as British Railways 35005 in March 1948, unusually carrying the letter ’s’ in front of the numbering for a short time while the Berkley Mechanical Stoker was trailed.
Attached to the 5,000 gallon tender, number: 3115, the tender also went through various modifications after the initial build was complete. British Railways would make the decision to rebuild the Merchant Navy class in the late 1950’s. 35005 was rebuilt in May 1959 and withdrawn from service in October 1965 but was fortunately saved from the scrapyard and is now preserved by the Mid-Hants Railway preservation Society.
